7 Bathroom Features That Prevent Injuries

Sep 28, 2022

Many homeowners design their bathrooms to match their aesthetic appeals. Therefore, bathroom safety features are not likely at the top of their list of priorities. However, they should be because these safety features prevent accidents and injuries.

Discover seven easy upgrades you can install to make your bathroom less prone to accidents.

1. Anti-Slip Flooring

Anti-slip flooring provides traction that helps to keep people from slipping and falling. The slip-resistance surface increases the frictional force between the floor and the person walking on it. For example, pebble tiles offer significant slip resistance and are an easy upgrade for any bathroom.

Also, you can ensure that the flooring options you choose have an unpolished surface finishing to increase slip resistance. For example, matte tiles are better than glossy tiles.

2. Grab Bars

Grab bars provide support and stability for people as they move around in bathrooms and other wet areas. They help prevent slipping by providing a firm grip to brace oneself against the wall or floor.

These assists individuals with disabilities who need support to bathe more easily. Grab bars are better situated on the bathtub's walls, but you can also install them near the toilet or shower.

3. Shower Bench

A shower bench provides a place to sit while taking a shower or bath. Your contractor should firmly install the shower bench and not rest it on the shower floor. You do not want it to move around and dislodge while in use.

One of the most common positions for installing a bench is facing the showerhead. This position will give you direct access to the shower. Additionally, you can use the shower water to clean the bench after your bath.

4. Proper Drainage

Wet floors are very slippery. If water pools on the floor of your shower, you are more likely to slip and fall. A proper drainage system like a drain hole can remove standing water and help your shower dry up faster.

5. Low Bathtub and Shower Curbs

When taking a shower, people commonly step over the edge of the tub to reach the showerhead or adjust the water temperature. This placement can be dangerous, especially if the floor is wet and slippery. A lower shower curb can make it easier to step into the shower without lifting your leg high to clear the curb.

A built-in bathtub can prevent slips and falls because the tub is flush with the floor. Thus, you don’t have to step up or down into the tub, which can reduce the risk of trips and falls.

6. Night-Lights

Night-lights can provide extra illumination if you need to get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. You can see where you are going so that you do not accidentally walk into something or fall. Also, you can avoid tripping over things or slipping on wet surfaces you cannot notice in low light.

7. Bathroom Segmentation

A bathroom with segmented sections can remove obstacles that might trip you when moving from one section to the other. For example, you can have the tub, toilet, and shower in different sections.

With safety, you can never be too careful. A bathroom is a place where people come to relax and unwind at the end of their day, so why not create a space that helps them do that?
